What is fascia?
Fascia is a fibrous network of loose, irregular, and fluid connective tissue found throughout the body. Think of shrink wrap around your muscles, not only containing, but also weaving through them! Often described as a knitted sweater, fascia is made up of ground substance, elastin fibers, and collagen fibers. The tissue is thixotropic, meaning it has the capability to change from a solid to a more gel-like consistency.
What is Myofascial Release?
Coined by osteopath, Robert Ward, and popularized by therapist and bodyworker, John F. Barnes, Myofascial Release works specifically on painful and problem areas by releasing tension in the interconnected soft tissues of muscle and fascia. The technique involves applying gentle, sustained pressure (3-6 minutes) into myofascial connective tissue restrictions, to eliminate pain and restore function/motion. It is performed directly on the skin without oils or creams, enabling the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia. Clients will often experience a melting, lengthening sensation, as restrictions release. It may be incorporated into a full body massage or can be used in a focused treatment designed to relieve acute or chronic symptoms, such as:
-Back Pain -Cervical Pain -Chronic Pain -Headaches -Carpel Tunnel -Fibromyalgia -Spasm/Spasticity -Scoliosis
-Sports Injuries -Restricted Motion -Sciatica
